Ok, not to sound cliche, but remember the musical Jesus Christ Superstar? Remember in the title song Judas sings "Israel in 4 BC had no mass communication!..." It's not like they could see his pic in the newspaper, or online. It was dark, and even with a full moon there were lots of olive trees around, casting shade on whatever light may have been around, so they still wouldn't have seen him.
Plus, it's not like the Roman army got off days to go listen to Jesus. Jesus and the Jews were a threat to Roman culture and power, and it was forbidden to be a soldier and a follower of Christ or Judaism.

Not necessarily. Back then, they didn't have the media, photos, etc to spread identification.
The soldiers didn't know what Jesus looked like. It's obvious when the soldier looked at Jesus and asked "where is Jesus of Nazareth", and Jesus replied "it is I",
That's why Judas kissed him (a greeting in that day, and even today) so that he would be identified.

Soldiers do what there told, else they get the punishment intended for the victim. The kiss is romanticism, if it was that dark how would Judas know who he was kissing? Better yet, who do you think was the person wrapped in a linen sheet who evaded the soldiers Which is written of in Mark?

The soldiers did not know Jesus. Judas kissed him because Jesus told him to so he could fulfill prophecy.

Most ordinary soldiers would have had no idea who Jesus was. You see, it was just a little bit before things like the internet, cable television, PHOTOGRAPHY. So yes, the kiss was an identifier.
If you are going to understand the past you MUST learn to put your head in the context of the times!

Some might have known and others perhaps weren't sure. But you have to keep in mind that they were outdoors at night and it was dark. Jesus wasn't by himself. The soldiers might not have wanted to cause any confusions. Also even though Jesus was "famous" because of everything that he did, most of it was through talk. There was no media to show his face to every single person in the city.

In a good many foreign countries people greet each other with a kiss. Judas walked up to Christ and kissed him and Jesus stated "You betray me with a kiss Judas?" It was Biblical, who really knows why it happened that way.

Donna, As contending for the religion the above poster has suggested, The kiss replaced into an illustration to the guards who they have been to arrest . this would have not been out of place as a kiss on the cheek replaced right into a very ordinary thank you to greet somebody in that component. additionally I cant see something in John 18 that would propose Judas could no longer get on the edge of Jesus.. desire this helped...God bless you ! John 18:3-12 New King James 3 Then Judas, having won a detachment of troops, and officers from the administrative clergymen and Pharisees, got here there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 4 Jesus subsequently, understanding all issues that would bump into Him, went forward and reported to them, “Whom are you searching for?”5 They replied Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus reported to them, “i'm He.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, additionally stood with them. 6 Now whilst He reported to them, “i'm He,” they drew lower back and fell to the floor. 7 Then He asked them lower back, “Whom are you searching for?” and that they reported, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 8 Jesus replied, “I even have advised you that i'm He. subsequently, in case you seek for Me, permit those bypass their way,” 9 that the asserting would be fulfilled which He spoke, “of those whom You gave Me I even have misplaced none.” 10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the intense priest’s servant, and decrease off his precise ear. I've heard that His brother James looked a lot like Him and the soldiers needed to be sure it was Jesus they captured.
