Quite a few times on web chats, I have seen folks go off on a tangent about how unbelievable a story is and how it doesn't make any sense or is completely impractical.

Have people forgotten how to identify a metaphor? Are people so angry inside that they can't take something good from a legend if they can't prove it to be a scientific fact?

I don't understand people who feel the need to "prove" the bible... does your faith require that?
I also don't understand people that laugh at the Greek myths and call it a "fake" religion because they can't just appreciate the metaphors and moral points.

Enlighten me. What do you require from a story in order to appreciate it?

very good question. to me its more of what people demand of themselves. people who are led to believe that something is true all their lives, then have that belief questioned or shaken, take it personality as an attack on their very identity. and thats not surprising, because many people base their entire identities around these stories and beliefs. thats why the whole issue is so personal, and people get so offended so easily by it

because of this, people have to zealously defend and prove and apologise for their beliefs. rather than acknowledge the possiblity that ANYTHING you believe today can be proven false tomorrow, these people have trapped themselves in the mindset that even though new information is being discovered daily, what they believe to be true based on 4000 year old stories will always be true. and thats sad

Many people lack faith. Its hard for people to just believe some unsubstantiated story just because it's supposed to be true. We live in the age of science and proof is very important to people. I personally don't put much stock in truth because at the end of the day its subjective. Your truth isn't necessarily mine. So i guess you just believe what you believe and see what happens.

The problem is, many people take the stories that are supposed to be myths as literal truth. They then set out to convince everyone else that they're true, even when they are very obviously not. They try to get these myths taught to our children as fact, when they are obviously not. Then when someone points out to them that they are, in fact, myths and are not meant to be taken as literal truth, they shun them, persecute them, and threaten them with eternal damnation.

The more demanding a person is, the more that person lacks.
What people can't find in themselves they tend to create for themselves out of religion.
A good story is a good story. Period. End of story.

most people need to see before they will beleive which is how many think.just like the bible there are many stories which are quite interesting and exciting. however people read them and think these are myths because they dont have faith in GOD. the bible is the inspired word of our creator.

You wanna know what I think? I think you're a metaphor for a stupid idiot. If you wore a colorful wig and a big red nose, I would be able to appreciate you.
