The term "global warming" is a specific case of the more general term "climate change" (which can also refer to "global cooling," such as occurs during ice ages). In principle, "global warming" is neutral as to the causes, but in common usage, "global warming" generally implies a human influence. However, the UNFCCC uses "climate change" for human-caused change, and "climate variability" for other changes [6]. Some organizations use the term "anthropogenic climate change" for human-induced changes.

Global warming was a theory originally published by Southampton University, in England in 1980. Whilst many predictions of the theory came true, many did not and the theory is largely discredited. But that is not the end of the story. The predictions that came true are a huge cause of concern and whilst some are easily explained by "Climate Change" many such as carbon emissions have been shown to need immediate remedial action.
Ice sheets have been shown to have melted because of a change in the weather system moving warm air across them. The same amount of rain falls but in different places, causing floods and droughts. Climate Change is beyond doubt and is now the preferred term for scientists.

ok i am tired of how this phrase is being BLOWN out of porportion. here a ratioanal clear cut look at what global warming is
16.000 yrs ago the earth was in an ice age. we know this as fact. at this time the ice age reached its apex. then the earth started to slowly warm over centuries. we know that parts of africa were used to farm that are now desert. sperd in part by geo-thermal activity, (volcanoes), sadly human kind is speeding up this natural warming with burning of fosal fuels

It's the phenomenon where the "globe" (meaning this planet) gets warmer.
People are still debating what causes it. Most agree that one way or another, it's humanity's fault.
Whether or not we can stop it is an entirely different question.

It's the ice caps melting from too much sun through the ozone layers. It actually makes the world colder despite the name for it.
We are on the average going down in temperature. We don;t have as many indian summers or super hot summers like we use too.

Bunch of bunk. It ignores cyclical climate change that naturally occurs on Earth, and blames it all on vehicle emissions and industrial activity.
