I'm stupid about pet food. I have been feeding my dog purina puppy chow, because he's only five months old, but now that he's growing up I am looking at different brands. I'm thinking I'll stick with Purina, but out of curiosity, I have heard lots of people say not to get Ol' Roy.. Anyone know WHY?

ProPlan is the only purina I would feed. Ol' Roy is BAD. Better off feeding the dog the bag.

Look at all the corn in Puppy Chow. Corn is a FILLER. Not digestable. That equals MORE POOP!! If you feed a food with little or no corn, the dog eats less and poops out less. More usable nutrition. If you want to pay for corn, that is fine, but if you want to pay for digestable food, switch!!!!!!!

I like Wal-Mart just fine. I still love my dogs and cats enough to not feed them crap. I don't take my kids to McDonalds for every meal, and I don't look to save a buck on their food.
If you can't afford to feed a good quality food, then don't have a pet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why not Ol' Roy or other commercial dog foods? Some one made a movie about the dangers of eating McDonald's or fast food aka "junk food" if a person lives off it. Well the same applies to animals. Here is a link that explains what many commercial dog foods have as their basic ingredients and you may think twice about what you are feeding your dog. This link is specific to Flint River which makes a premium dog food but it is not the only dog food with healthy ingredients for your dog. I feed mine Nature's Recipe and they do best on the wild game varieties. Dick Van Patten has a good dog food out, PetSmart sells an EXCELLENT brand of dog food in their "Authority" line of food with their "Oven baked" product. All their Authority line of food is good and reasonably priced. Royal Canine is another good brand.
Some premium brands are not as good as they seem to be and may cost more than what is listed here.
Some people prefer a raw diet. www.rawdogranch.com is a good link if you want to go that route.

Ole' Roy is a nutritional disaster. It is comparatable to feeding a dog gravy & fat soaked cardboard. Many dogs have gotten sick from eating Ole'Roy. It is one of the very worst foods a person can feed a dog.

Susie Q if you are feeding one Dane 40# in a week and a half to two weeks you need to find a better quality food to feed. I have Danes and have for over 25 years. I show Danes in conformation, rally and obedience. I fed two adult Danes Chicken Soup For The Dog Lover's Soul Adult Formula and 35# lasted 2 1/2 weeks. I am currently feeding Canidae to 2 Danes and 40# lasts me a good 3 weeks +.
The better quality the food the less you will need to feed in order to maintain a good weight and for your dog to get the proper nutritional value from it.People buy cheap because they think they are saving money, however in reality they aren't saving a thing, they are spending more and producing more waste.

The reason that Ol'Roy is bad is that they use wheat instead of a meat for the main ingedient and then they use corn which causes diabetes and then soy which dogs have a hard time digesting, which means more poop and then they use by products which has no nutritional value. When buying a food look for one that had a Meat as the first ingredient and then rice. The first three ingredients of a food make up 80 percent of the food. The best food i have found for your dollar is NUTRO NATURAL CHOICE. Anything that you can by at a grocery store or wal-mart is not worth feeding to your dog.
Nutro works out to $1.00 per pound.

Ol'Roy is the worst food you could ever buy for your dog. A vet once told me that an experiment was done on O'lRoy dog bones. The bones were placed in water and boiled. The bones dissolved but there was one thing left behind - HAIR! Please spend the extra money for your dog. Ol'Roy products are dangerous!

If you are feeding Purina Puppy Chow now, when it is time I would switch your pup to Purina One Chicken and Rice (not just plain Purina Dog Chow) the Purina One is alittle higher quality than the dog chow. O'l Roy would not be a food I would recommend it has lots and lots of fillers. Good Luck.

Ol'Roy is not dog food it is just filler. See the label not much meat there. If you want good food for your puppy go to a good pet store ( Petsmart or Petco) and get advice there. I use Royal Canin it has high protein and low fillers. This equals small poops. This is because the dog utilizes almost all of the food. The only good Purina food is Purina One. You should have your puppy on puppy food till he is at least 1 year old. If your puppy is a large breed dog you should keep him on puppy food until he is 2 years old. Also if it is a large breed puppy keep him on large breed puppy food. It actually has fewer calories than puppy food for small breeds because he will be growing for so much longer than a small breed. One last reason to not get Ol'Roy the poop really, really, really, smells bad!!!!!!!

It is bad because of corn, by products and cheap fillers. Of course, I wouldn't feed purina, either. The cheapest brand I know of that I would actually feed my own dogs is Kirkland's signature. It is the Costco brand dog food. It contains none of the nasty fillers and is less than $20.00 for a 40lb bag. You also feed less food and have less poop when you feed a high quality diet, hence making it a more cost effective food. By the way, I am not saying just cheap foods are bad, Science Diet and Iams are junk, also, so learn to read labels and don't be bought by advertising.

Check out www.petfoodproject.com Its a decent place to start checking out nutrition for your pet, if you are really interested.

Ol'Roy is a cheap dog food. It has a lot of fillers in it. Look at the ingredients, and compare the first 3 to 4 ingredients of higher quality dog foods. It is like you eating rice cakes...it will feel you up, but not very nutritious. Cheap dog foods are very oily, why? because dogs would not eat it otherwise. If you are looking for a cheap dog food that is a good food, I found at Costco, their brand of dog food (Kirklands) the first two ingred. are lamb or chicken and lamb or chicken meal...no corn or wheat...I was surprised! Of course it is not Science Diet, or Nutro, or Wathom, but not everyone can afford $1.50-$2.00 a lb. We have a great dane, and he goes through a 40lb bag in about a week and a half to two weeks...that is almost $100 a month in dog food. I love my dog and want the best for him, but he is a dog, and my kids come first. I pay $16.00 for a 40lb of chicken, or $19.00 for a 40lb of lamb.

I have to disagree with large breed puppy food. I have to keep my Great Dane on adult dog food because of the protein. Large breed puppies grow 2x as fast as small breeds, and when they grow too fast, it causes hip and joint problems. I also had a Rottweiler (did not know better) that I had on a high protein diet as a puppy, and he had bad arthritis as an elder. Had I known better, he would have been on an adult dog food.

It's basically like you eating Burger King for dinner, or a organic wholesome meal. There is a big difference. I, personally, feed my dogs Solid Gold. It's all natural, good for them AND they love the taste! I fed my 5 year old American Pit Bull Terrier Purina One since she was a puppy. She was very healthy (but I'm gonna put that on her parents and my ownership) but she always had really bad breath. As soon as I switched her, her breath has been great and she's definitely more "regular". It's a great brand, you should check it out for yourself. Other than that, I would just say really look into whatever you're feeding your pet, because you love them and want them to be happy and healty for as long as possible and it definitely starts with good nutrition as does with humans! Good luck.
