I understand it, but don't agree. The liberals in this world tend to fight for the needy, middle-class, social programs, education, the environment and endangered species, human rights and freedom, and civil rights and privacy.
Since most of the above are, sadly, often seen as 'lost causes', they tend to be linked to the young, who are not yet jaded by the realiites of the world and politics and by the power of corporations and the ultra-rich.
At 45, I remain a liberal, albeit an often lonely one....

Until I was 25 I was a Liberal ( I'm Canadian so that is like US Dems.) . Until 35-Conservative, because of 2 great men leading that party .( Diefenbaker & Stanfield),
And for the next 35 years , I've really grown and have been a Socialist, (Definately not Communist)
I think of myself as a young 70.
Reading "Sweetpoll's" definition of liberal is very close to my feelings.

I had never heard that, but it almost applies to me. Of course, when you're young, you tend to be idealistic (which I equate with "liberalism"). Now that I'm 45, I find that I'm sooooo liberal on some issues and sooooo conservative on others. I don't really have a term for what I "am" politically speaking. I just say I'm right! hahahaha

it still applies. i'm 19 and i'm really liberal. when you're younger you have more heart because you're more likely to accept all things, be more for gays and stem cell research, stuff like that. basically you're more compassionate. when you're older, you have your own kids, you're gonna want to be more protective and less likely to just accept everything, which is another way to say you're using your head.
