Because they did not know he was God, I guess. And they were doing their job/s. Maybe he also thought that society had made them like this? I don't know what ran through his head! But it also shows how forgiving and selfless Jesus was, I suppose.
And can't everyone learn a lesson from that?

Jesus was evidently speaking about the Roman soldiers who impaled him. They did not know what they were doing, being ignorant of who Jesus really was. Of course, the religious leaders who instigated that execution were far more reprehensible, for they acted knowingly and maliciously. For many of them, no forgiveness was possible.—John 11:45-53.

Hi, I am Rational Spirituality,
As Christ said, you cannot hold responsible someone for a deed which the perpetrator did not comprehend.
People judge others based on their deeds, but God judges people according to their intent, not necessarily the outcome of their actions.
The bible is largely misinterpreted in that instance, because it had been written by fallible mortals 325 yeas after the life of Christ.
For the correct interpretation of the criteria for Judgment by God, please refer to "Rational Spirituality" available on the Dhaxem website.

Because they truly didn't know what they were doing! Also, had He died with hatred in His heart, His sacrifice would've been wasted on sin that shouldn't have been there. We're taught to not let "....sin reign in your mortal body," so therefore he HAD to forgive them for OUR sakes.

God is full of mercy and abounding in lovingkindness-
James 5:11
As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

Yes, He forgave them. The centurion at the base of the cross, upon Jesus' death actually became a Christian.

Because he loves us so much that truly they did not know as it was then and is today. We are all children of God, one family in Christ would you not want what is best for your brothers and sisters and ask your father to be merciful?

Because He loved them and bore their sins upon His back, so that if they came to their senses, and repented, they could be saved just like us all.
