She was probably informing the kitten that it had no business in her territory!
I doubt if it was because she would like a brother or sister. When I was born my brother was three and he hit me over the head with my father's cane!
She is used to all the attention, all the food, all the best places to sleep and hang out, etc. So she will not be immediately accepting of an intruder. They might end of best buddies and they might end up just tolerating each other's presence.
It's your home and if you want another cat or kitten you should have one. You might go to www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article titled "Cat to Cat Introductions". That will give you some clues about what you might expect and how to forestall some possible problems.

I had the same dilemma with Nelson, my 7 month old neutered male. I wanted a second cat, and I thought it might keep Nelson occupied. I acquired Emma, a 2 year old spayed female. The first few days were a bit sketchy but I followed all the standard advice (separate rooms, let them get used to smells, etc etc) and they settled down fairly quickly.
They've been together 2 months now. Emma keeps more to herself than Nelson does. I'm not sure if this is her natural personality or if it's a reaction to Nelson. For his part, Nelson is definitely fairly territorial, and tends to "protect" certain rooms. It's often hard to tell if he's being playful or serious when he chases her around the house, but Emma is quite capable of protecting herself with an outstretched claw when it becomes necessary.

Cats will usually get along without killing each other. If you are comfortable with having just the one you have, that is fine too. Look at it like this. If your cat is usually happy with being your only lovey, talking over the garden hedge to a young neighborhood kitty doesn't necessarily mean that your Cat wants you to move it in on your cat's territory. Good luck.

it is really up to you if you think that you can deal with two cats
if your cat is a female and spayed i would suggest a neutered male there will always be a period of adjustment were your cat now will be very out of place seeings cats are like to be alone there will be fighting and hissing which will pass trust me on that because i have 3 cats and they all fought at one point in time now they are very happy just a suggestion that you have separate food and water as well as litter till they get used to each other i have had my 3 cats for 4yrs now and they all still have there own food dishes

since shes already two years old she would most likeley get along with a male kitten. they are pretty much guarenteed to growl or hiss at each other at first. after a day or two they will be used to eachother. and dont force them to get along, like hold them together-- they will bond when theyre ready and when they realize which one is dominant. i think it is a good sign that she didnt hiss at the cat outside, whenever my cats see a cat outside they go crazy! but she might have only been acting like that because the kitten wasnt inside "her" house. and if you get a male be sure to spay him!!!! and a two year old cat can deffinatly get along with a kitten. our first female cat was 3 when we got our 2nd kitten and they got along fine. our cats are all different ages and were different ages when we got them (at different times) so age doesnt really matter like that one person said....

Probably, but you have to rember if you get a male cat and you already have a female they will most likely make babies and not just one babie and not just one time either. Cats produce a lot. But, another female cat should be fine, it jsut depends on the age and if you keep them inside or outside.

it depends on your cat. the cat i used to have allowed other cats in the house after a while he got used to them. but when he went out side he would attack any cat, dog, rabbit, mouse, mole, ect... that he seen in HIS yard. cats are just funny like that and you will never know how your cat is until you bring another cat inside.

is she fixed? if it was a boy and she's not, she was flirting. if she is fixed, maybe she would enjoy a friend. or maybe she was being maternal. unlike dogs which are pack animals, cats enjoy solitude for the most part.
