if you're near the termini station, the main attractions / city centre is a bit further away ... you can easily get a bus into the centre though. the metro is easy to use but only has a few stops.. one of which is next to the colloseum

I walked the entire city of Roma, so yes everything is near by.
Better to walk, if you have the stamina, then take metro, as you see more and less chance of being pick pocketed and way more fun and spontaneity! All of Roma is an attraction!
