External hard drive, CD/DVD, or sending them to another computer on your network is about it, other then uploading them online and downloading later, which would run pretty expensive for 30 GB of online storage space, not to mention time consuming to upload and download again. Or you could use a nondestructive partition program like Partition Magic to partition the disk, move your files to the second partition, then reformat the first partition.
I would go with the CD/DVD option if I were you, probably quickest, easiest and cheapest solution.

in the journey that they did an entire reformat, your screwed. in the journey that they did a "quick" reformat then theres wish that the documents living house windows living house windows hasnt written over would nicely be recovered. this can require a particular software that you'll boot to and itll discover/reproduction deleted files. Searcg google for "bootable document fix" or some thing like that. It could be some thing that boots from a floppy, CD, or different media. Even then, theres no guaruntees. There are also fix facilities you may employ and they'll look into it for you.

If you have any web space anywere (ie maybe your ISP) you can upload it to there. If your ISP doesn't give you that much storage space you could use an online storage site. They can be expensive so you might want to look around. A web hosting company is another option and they would probably be much cheaper.

I think you've covered all the popular options, apart from the possibility of adding a second drive to back it up to.
