Well, it's not a birth defect; but a Neurological condition such as Cerebral Palsy can affect walking.

i wouldn't call it a birth defect if a toddler falls because 9/10 times kids do fall when they are toddlers but to be on the safer side see a doctor i hate when they ask to get a million tests done on babies they are so small and torturing them with the tests are soemtimes pathetic

Try getting his hearing checked by an ent doctor or pediatric ent specialist. Kids run fluid behind the eardrum because the eustacian tube placement in babies and young children is different than adults. Work with your pediatrician (hopefully you have him under one and not a md). There is a world of difference between the two because a pediatrician wants to find a definite cause for an ailment; an md wants to try different courses and this may or may not due because it is time consuming and mother's "gut" feelings are what?
I had the best care for my kids under pediatricians. When they were about eight to ten years then under the family doctor. The pediatrician I had for my son (due to well baby clinic and chest cave in upon inhalation) ended up in quick diagnosis by expert specialist. He is fine to this day. The key is to work with a primary and ....Good Luck...

Inner ear problems, developmental delays could be some of the causes. To be sure, contact your doctor so he can do some testing. Toddlers fall a lot too.

My children fell a lot when they were learning the balance thing. I also notice that they get a little "clumsier" when they're on a growing spurt. Of course any concerns contact the pediatrician.
