Had the same problem. Ya just gotta hunker down and endure it. Consider it a lesson in getting along in the world.
I had a horrible roommate that was never sober and the dean wouldn't change our room. Wishing you good luck.

Are you sharing a room? If you have your own separate room then it would be the best just to stay your separate ways. When I was in college (thank heavens) I had my own room. I just made sure I had no interaction with the roommate I didn't like or just talked to him only if necessary. I also made sure that each semester the person sharing the room next to me (at least 1 of the 2) was a friend. If your sharing a room and she/he really bugs you, GET A ROOM CHANGE. It maybe hard because the semester started. Talk to a dean or supervisor as this is your job. In the worst case scenario, make sure you reserve a room NOW for next semester with someone else. Just study in the library or a friend's room. Good luck!

If you are in the dorms - you can usually be transferred out if a room is available. and they wont stick any penalties on you for cost, etc. - but ask about it to be sure. If you are in an apartment, see if you can find another roomate, or ask your roomate to find another roomate. You may be violating your contract, but there are usually some ways to work it out.

If you are going to stay with each other then try and set up some rules to respect each other. Be open to learning.
If you just can't live with each other then get a transfer. Start networking and try and get with a room mate that you do like. Or find a place to live off campus.
If the person is doing something that is grounds for being kicked out of the dorm then report them.

Ask for a transfer. Seriously.
I had a racist roomate my freshman year of college, who got drunk and insulted a dozen italian guys on St. Patty's day (my roomate was irish), and then locked himself in our room, pissed his pants, bed and the floor out sheer terror at what these guys were going to do to him (they were waitng outside, pounding on the door). when I came home that night, and found a puddle of piss on the floor, and the rasicst @sshole roomate cowered in the corner, I asked for a transfer the next day, but couldn't get one because the semster was almost over.
He also flipped out at me when he returned from a weekend at his parents and found a single cigarette butt in an old coffee mug on my desk. I had only smoked inside because there was a blizzard outside, and it was really late at night. he said he was allergic to the smell of smoke, yet I saw him smoking a week later.
Seriously, ask for a transfer....even if you don't get it until next semester, it will be worth it.

Just calm down, I live in a dorm where they don't allow room changes. If you haven't already, make a roommate contract with your roommate, saying such things as lights out by a certain time, don't touch my things, or whatever you're having problems with. Also, TALK to your roommate about the stuff that is bothering, they might not be aware of it. Don't attack them, just ask them about it. Be mature about it, and if they aren't, find a mediator. Your RA or SLC or whatever they call them should be able to help. Talking solves a lot of problems. And just ignore them if you must, but don't ignore them completely.

Try to lay down some ground rules while you search for a new roomate.

First, try for a room transfer. If that won't work, then figure out and write down some rules together, and try to compromise.
Make sure to be as civil as possible. Just because you don't like each other doesn't mean you can't make it work.

In life you will always run into someone you do not like. You don't have to like your colleague at work but you still have to act professional. Don't do or say anything to personally attack him because you want to look like the adult in this situation. First semester is almost over, then find a new location, maybe by yourself.
