You have to understand that a lot of the Old Testament is basically just a historical account of what happened. Some of the stories you read in the OT are very violent and it often seems that the Israelites were a very bloodthirsty people.
You have to keep in mind though, that these were different times and also that God did not necessarily approve of what was happening.
As for the laws, they were given to the Israelits as their constitution so to speak. Theirs was to be a theocracy (the only true one ever in history). The law was given as a means to govern every day life within their society. Since it was a much more primitive society, most of these laws have become obsolete.
Other laws don't apply anymore, simply because today, most Jews live under a secular government and have to live by the law of their country.
Even so, some laws still apply today.
People who think the God of the OT is unforgiving and cruel whereas the God of the NT is only loving and kind have never read the Revelation (last book in the Bible).
The NT is not only about love and forgiveness, it is also about judgment. Yes, God is merciful and kind but he is also holy and just and he will punish wickedness and sin.
If you read the whole NT through to the end, you will see that the God who destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah (after having given them a chance to repent) is also the God who will one day judge this earth, nation after nation, you, me and every single person that has ever lived!

The Old Testament was Jewish Law, for Gods people, the Jews, to follow.
With Christ, in the new testament, ALL people became Gods people, and the laws changed because Christ established the New Covenant.

The New Testament is a New Covenant through Jesus Christ. Because Jesus has come and died and rose again on the cross and now we have a new Covenant with Him. For his greatest commandment for us is to love one another- when you do this, you are obeying all the other commandments- those who believe in Jesus Christ are set free- forgiven, past, present and future- yet we still need to obey God's commandments- and when you are saved in Christ, you WANT to obey them- because You love the Lord so much. God does not change- He is the same God as the Old Testament- it is just a NEW COVENANT.

JESUS came with a new covenant for mankind which is the New Testament. GOD said that the old testament was too hard for man to follow which included sacrifices of blood. Animal blood did not cover our sins. JESUS Crucifixion covered our sins by HIS blood and GOD can look upon us without seeing our sins when we accept JESUS into our lives. GOD is GOD yesterday, today and tomorrow... GOD has not changed at all.

Because the people in the Old Testament lived prior Jesus' death and resurrection. They were looking forward in time to salvation and utilizing sacrifice, etc., as an outward means of a show of faith that the Messiah would come.
When Jesus came, he fulfilled the Messianic laws and provided salvation through His death and Resurrection. We on this side of time are looking back to His death and resurrection.

the old testiment was supposed to represent the time before jesus and the new one is AD. You have just seen the problem with believing in something written by man. opinions are always going to interject in anything. 3 sides to every story. your truth, my truth and the flat out truth.i'd hate to try to count all the sides that went into making the bible.

their god is "unchanging" yet throughout the old testament he is portrayed as murderous and angry, and jelous. in the new testament he is loving and forgiving, and merciful. there is a clear distinction between the OT and the NT, anyone with a mind can see that.
