Advertising helps to place the product in the viewers mindset. How they can identify with the product. They use the techniques like, role model, spokes person, significant parallel etc; as the method and theme of the advertisement. So if it is spokes person, they select a personality whom the particular niche towards which the marketing is directed at can identify with. For example if it is on some investments, they might choose a reliable and believable person who has made it good in life. John Newcombe speaking for Foldgers coffee in US is an example.

most important underlying function would be actually recalling the product....nothing will make a marketer happier than having his product on the minds of most people...advertising helps u in differentiating brands....
how they achieve it is by actually using humor, emotion, music in the ads....celebs in most cases assist in getting the ad noticed....

besides getting us to buy things we don't really want or need until we are practically brainwashed into believing we do need them, advertising is helping keep our economies going. many, if not most, big business is in more in debt creditwise than any person ever imagined. they have no choice but to get bigger, sell more, etc. or our world could just come tumbling down.

Advertising is based mostly on one thing: fear.
Manufacturers produce items and then market them based on our fear of not having said item. That if we don't buy their product we will be ugly, or smelly, or fat, or uncool, or we'll get some disease and die.
