I get canker sores fairly often. Right now, I have a huge one on my tonsils and I can barely eat! I use the Peroxyl mouth rinse, but does any know of any medicines I can put directly on the sore? Most of the medicines I have seen just numb it, but I want something to clean it out and help it heal!!

Campho-Phenique is available at most drug stores and discount stores. It will kill germs and also deaden pain. I also use Chloroseptic mouth spray. Sometimes diet can cause canker sores. Some nuts, tomatoes and acidic fruits can cause them. Sugary foods also could be the culprit.

I agree w/ Bess. I heard the same about Lysine..but from my experience, that only works best when the canker sore is in its early stages (when you feel that tingling sensation) to prevent its full development. You can buy that in the vitamin aisle. Antiviral med works too, since a canker sore is caused by the herpes virus, not bacteria, but that is by prescription only. Unfortunately, the canker sore will never go away. once u have it in your body, it will go into remission until something like stress triggers its awakening. Oh, what I have done also, is mix baking soda and lemon together and this would definitely hurt, but it numbs the sucka for a long time.

I don't know what you can put on it but if you take lysine I read that it helps immune system and you will have fewer outbreaks. I've also heard it is related to cold sores and antiviral meds for herpes may help but you would have to speak with your physician for that. As far as cleaning it Gargle with salt water because I think listerine or something would be too painful. Use warm salt water and it should provide some comfort. Get some lysine and ask pharmacist how to take it and take it all the time so you will not get as many outbreaks. Call your physician and ask for his advice or your denist.
