Orchestral and choral rehearsals are always competing with sporting activities at lunch times and after school in 'club' times. This forces children to choose music or PE at a very early stage and they frequently have to give up the other activity because of lack of practice time.
How many of you have found (in your youth maybe) that you were virtually forced to give up either a sport, or a musical activity (or instrument)?

i was a cheerleader from the time i was 7 until my senior year in highschool, i was also in honors chorus from 8th-12th grade. they never conflicted. generally chorus was an in school thing and cheerleading was a after school thing, the majority of people in my choir also played sports with no problem. maybe what you are talking about is a school specific thing. in elementary and middle school we were required to take gym and chorus. then in highschool you have to take a gym requirement and then a "arts" requirement, which can include theater, art class, chorus, photography etc. our choir teacher was very accepting of the fact that we all had after school activities and would schedule our necessary after school practices around that. i found it very easy to balance both.

Not so much sport but I really wanted to study Music at GCSE however, it clashed with History so I was forced by my teacher to take that instead. Given a choice, I would gladly have dropped the History but I can remember that the teacher bullied me into doing it.

There is never enough time to do everything. We make choices all of our lives. I choose music when I was young. I exercise to stay fit and walk, but I know how to read music and enjoyed the experience of playing in a group.
