You should see a doctor. You may have congestive heart failure, or it could be a blood clot, or cellulitis, all of which are dangerous.

The previous suggestion about the congestive heart failure and blood clots is an excellant one and you ought to see your doctor about it. I also want to mention that this could be due to a medication that you're taking like Avandia or Alleve which are known to cause mild or moderate edema (swelling) which, speaking from experience can be painful. Check your food and beverage consumption too. If you've been eating a lot of oriental, prepared, frozen or canned foods you may be ingesting a lot of sodium which can cause swelling.
To help relieve the swelling you should drink more water to flush your system out, eat foods that are lower in sodium and stop drinking sodas and juices. Coffee and tea are both mild diuretics and may help relieve some of the swelling. No matter how painful it is, you need to be walking every day for over half an hour. Try using support hose or socks - they really help. If you can afford it, get a full massage from a licensed professional. Massage helps with detoxifying your body and it helps improve your circulation. When you are relaxing at home - keep your feet elevated on an ottoman or on the coffee table. I hope any of this works.

You would be best going and seeing a Dr. and have what everyone else is saying get some blood work done .
If you can't afford a doctor I would then say, stay away from, all nuts, {anything with a lot of salt in them} - if you are a little over weight this will have a lot to do with the problem. Keep you legs elevated take a wet cold towel and place it across your legs this will help swelling to go down.
If you go to emergency then can treat you also....

Have you thought about going and getting blood work done for rheumatoid arthritis? Google RA. I am always swelling with fever etc. Hurts like the devil at times.....
Also retaining water always causes some pain. Go to the doctor find out for sure why you are doing this. Ibuprofen I swear by and taking it since I was 13, it brings the inflammation down. I do not no if it would do anything if you are retaining water?
Good luck and remember some pain medications cause seizures in some peeps, so be careful out there......
