Last night my dog kept me up half the night wanting outside- I'd take him out and all he'd do is stand and stare accross the street into the woods. I thought maybe there was a stray dog somewhere off in that direction barking that he could hear. Today, though, he keeps whining. Not like he's hurt or anything- just bored or anxious whining.. What's up with him?

He's a male cocker spaniel and only 5 months old- not neutered because he is going to be used for breeding. Would he already recognize a female in heat at five months of age?

Is he neutered? If not, I guarantee there is a female in heat. My male Rotti would stand under my window at night and just whine and cry. When I took him for a walk, he pulled me to a house in our neighborhood and stopped. I asked if their female Rotti (knew them) was in heat, and they said she was. Dogs can smell a female in heat for up to a mile (I think).
If you don't intend to breed him, I suggest getting him neutered. It will solve this problem in the future.
Good luck.
FYI...females are in heat for about 3 weeks, so get ready for several sleepless nights.

I always take heed to my dogs behavior, weather its 12 noon or 2 am, dogs seem to have a 6th sense, something has/is gone astray in the woods, I myself would get a friend and take the dog for a walk in that area, don't go alone even with your dog, and do it today it may be something or someone needs help, or it could be nothing, yet better to be safe than sorry.

It is very possible that there is something that your dog senses that may pose a threat to you and that is why your dog wanted outside, to find out what it is and to possibly protect you better. I wouldn't let your dog out without someone, and keep an eye on the woods or call a local authority to take a look.

Maybe there is a female in heat over there or there could be someone in the woods that he can sense isn't a good person. Is your health okay? Believe it or not, our dogs sense when we are not well and they can sense spirits too, so just be hyper aware. Also, he could be sensing someone who is hurt or dying in those woods. Beware.

This is interesting. There is something out there that concerns or interests him. Perhaps a new dog or animal is in the area. Perhaps a female is in heat. I would make sure to keep an eye on him and report any other odd behaviour to your vet. Good luck. :)

argh i hate when my dog does that. i would take her out and (sometimes) she'll just stand there. I have to keep reminding/saying 'Go potty, Suzie'. If the grass is wet, it takes her awhile to get her on the grass..cuz shes not a big fan of being wet considering she's a water dog. but maybe there is something wrong...maybe you can take the dog for a walk and find whats making him act like that

If I were you I would be worried. I would maybe look and make sure you can't see anyone or anything. I would also keep my doors looked. I could also be something wrong with your dog. I hope it all works out! This is what I think.

Keep your doors locked. It sounds like there's something in the woods that's making him nervous.
