Yorkies are small (between 3-10 lbs), have silky silver/black hair. They need to be brushed daily or every 2-3 days to keep their hair from matting. Some are barkers, and are hyper. All that I have known (3-4) are shy (scared of everything). They need to be taken to the groomer ever 4-6 weeks.
Bichon Frise look a lot like poodles (hair, not the way they are groomed). They are white, and have a very curly coat. They have to be brushed daily (unless you have them shaved) to keep the hair from matting. The grooming goes for them also. Both are great dogs, but I think that Bichon's are a better breed for children to be around (I'd be afraid that a small child would break something). Both can be left at home as long as they are kept in a safe area of the house (I suggest crate training). The Yorkies I have known have separation issues and have to be crated (don't know if that is a "breed" issue or not).
Good Luck on your decision.

I'd go with the Bichon Frise. They are VERY easy going, and super sweet. I have a Bichon Frise mix, and she's just wonderful. Yorkies are great dogs as well, but I don't think will do as well alone in the daytime. All small dogs like company, though, so that's a tough one. You do have to comb Bichons at least 2-3 times a week, so they won't get matted (tangled).

I have a mixed Bichon Frise and Scottish Terrier. He`s a great dog! When he`s left alone he doesn`t bark at all (I checked with the neighbours). I don`t know if this will help you, I hope so.

Bichon frise are dependable little dogs. They a friendly, don't moult, will happily walk alongside and not go chasing after squirrels etc., don't like getting their feet wet! Seems to becoming a more popular breed, I see a lot around. As with all small dogs can be a bit yappy.

I had my little Yorkie girl for 15 yrs and still miss her badly..She was the sweetest, most personable little dog..But did not like to be left alone. Of course, she put up with it during the day, since I have to work, but wanted the night to be just us. Be prepared for staying in almost every night. Having a dog like this is almost like having a baby in a way..Most toy dogs tend to be this way-Independent about some things, but needing constant comforting most of the time. Here's a little info on yorkies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yorkshire_Terrier
Bichons are also nice dogs, I actually just dog-sitted for one a week ago..She has a very good personality but was very stubborn about what she wanted to do..when she wanted to do it. This breed is usually a very sociable little dog, which makes them good in multiple-pet families. Any can easily turn into tyrants if not trained properly..they like to rule the house:) Heres some info on bichons:http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/bichonfrise.htm
So, It really depends on what you are willing to do-My little girl was worth every second-but it's quite a commitment. Both these breeds also require very regular grooming...which is important and can be costly..Please research before you make your final decision.

Ouch. Neither dog is a real one.
Get a Weimaraner or two, they're real dogs.
Each of the other two have breed societies, with websites.
Just google them!
