I'm shopping for a 40 inch LCD TV and don't know which has the better picture, Sony or JVC.

A Sony lcd tv has better picture. This is so because Sony is higher class company and owns a patent for some kind of screen imaging for lcd, that is why it is the best. For a plasma a Panasonic has some patent and it has the best picture.

It really depends. I own a 40" Sony LCD TV, and it has a beautiful picture, especially when the channel is HD. But, they are expensive. You are paying a lot for the name. JVC isn't bad, but you should also look into Panasonic and Samsung. If you have it narrowed down to either Sony or JVC, I would go with Sony, if you don't mind paying more. Also, you can go to websites like circuitcity.com, and look at what people have said about those TVs.
