i keep trying to take pictures of my cat, but his eyes look like spot lights in every single pic, what should i set my camera for to be able to see the blue eyes he has?

Lots of people saying "don't use flash." Well, that's the easy answer, but not necessarily the most helpful! That's like somebody saying "my car makes funny noises when I hit the brakes" and somebody else saying "well, don't hit the brakes!"

You *can* use a flash, but the comment about the light reflecting off the back of the cat's eye is correct -- it's also what happens when you get red-eye in a picture of a person. If you want to use flash, you have to avoid having the light bounce back at the camera. If you have an SLR with a detachable flash unit, move the flash away from the camera -- above or to the side. If your flash is fixed to the camera, you can try bouncing the light around (tricky but better results) or defusing the flash (results may not be all that great).

Bouncing the light can be done with a variety of white materials -- they just need to keep the light from striking the cat directly from the camera. For example, experiment with the back of a white business card and a white wall (so the light goes from the flash to the card to the wall to the cat). Get creative -- remember, it doesn't matter how goofy the camera and other stuff may have looked when the photo was taken, it's the photo itself that counts!

Defusing requires something white and semi-opaque between the flash and the subject. I've heard of placing tissue paper over the flash, and I've personally used a chunk cut out of one of those semi-opaque white film canisters, which just happened to "clip" nicely over the flash.

Or, yes, if the situation allows it, don't use your flash!

Here's what you gotta do:

the back of your cats eyes will reflect onto the camera if you shine a light into them. This could also be a flash.
If you light your cat from the side, and do not use any flash, then no light will enter into the cat's eye directly, and the picture should turn out great. Try using some window light.

There are a few things you can do, both while taking the photo and editing it. When taking the photo, try not to use the flash as much as possible- turn on as many lights as possible, take photos during the day, etc. I always take photos of my kitties with the camera on the "high speed" setting (since they move around), trying not to use the flash at all. Then when editing, if you use the shutterfly editing software, they have a special setting/fix specifically to address pet glowing eyes, that is separate from human red eye fixes.

make sure he is in a well lit room ( natural lighting is the best ) and make sure you ahve the flash settings off ..
do not have the natural lighting behind him, but behind you and bright enough to illuminate the room well..
I have a pic of one of my cats as my avatar..it is my Tonkinese that has aqua blue eyes.. I also used a very dark colored backdrop and placed it underneath him too

Take the picture outside in the sun. The cats pupils will be mostly closed from the bright sunlight.

take the pic with no flash and with plenty of natural light behind you when you take it. also if your going to put the pic on your computer there are plenty of pic printing programs that can take out the pet eye effect.
good luck.

No flash. Use window light or natural light. I do this all the time with my cat b/c she hates the flash.
