I am wanting to get my boyfriend a good camcorder for christmas but i don't know anything about them. he is an ametuer film maker so i need something that would suit his needs. any ideas? nothing too too expensive please.

Always Look for a 3-CCD Camera, as these greatly enhance the look of the image. These can start as low as probably $700 for a decent one.
The Canon GL Series is a good starting block, however they run about $1500-$2500 depending on where you go, what you get.
For my first real prosumer camera I purchased a Panasonic DVC60 Pro. It was $2300 from BH Photo Video but well worth the price. I loved it, and still bring it out ocansionaly for smaller gigs. Also, Canon makes the XL Series, which are great cameras, but they get on up in the $3500 - $6500 range.
