Divinity is a soft, melt in your mouth candy made out of merengue that has been baked, it is often colored to be light pink or green. It is overly sweet. I hate it!

If you have not had a good pot of Louisiana Seafood Gumbo, you do not kow what you are missing! It is a type of stew usually made with some for of seafood in it, although when I used to visit my grandparents in LA after Thanksgiving they would use left over turkey meat and smoked sausage to make the best gumbo ever. It should be spicy and thick, you can add rice if you like, but my favorite thing to stir in was always file, a spice made from ground up sassafrass root, mmmmmmmmmm!

Yes, some people will think of the schools of divinity first. Not me, I think CANDY!

And where I live the soil is considered gumbo (clayey and hard to work). So we call the dish by its full name: Shrimp (or whatever the main ingredient is) gumbo.

I know what both of the foods in question are and how they are made. The first is divinity fudge and it is a candy, the second is gumbo and it is a soup or stew dish. Both are very good.

Yum, divinity. Haven't had it in years. Some little old lady on my Dad's mail route used to make it for him at Christmas. It is candy, is white and kinda fluffy, often has nuts in it. Yum. Never learned to make it myself, can't seem to make penuche, either.
I have never had homemade gumbo, just something called gumbo from a can. Sounds good, though. I've seen Emeril make it.

My family makes divinity every Christmas, really a great sugary candy! I still think it is funny that my Aunt who makes it has 2 kids who are pastors...must have rubbed off!

Gumbo is a stew.

I know what divinity is and I hate the stuff. It is way too sweet for me.
As for gumbo, I know what that is too. I used to serve it in the college cafeteria. I never ate it though.

Divinity is a candy made with egg whites, sugar and corn syrup. It often has nuts and flavoring (especially vanilla).

Gumbo is a southern seafood stew made traditionally with crayfish, shrimp, and fish. It usually has rice and okra in it. The rue (gravy) is usually dark brown and made from flour or corn starch in oil.
