DSP is used to retrieve data from a signal, then shape that signal anyway you want. Since it is digital it is much more efficient than analog, instead of 3 active filters you need only the software. Go here:

Digital signal processing involves taking an analog signal, digitizing it, processing it, and sometimes converting back to analog. The processing can involve anything done by analog filtering, and much more.

Common applications include noise reduction, crosstalk cancellation, signal analysis, and compression and decompression.
