Hot dogs are usually a mildly flavored mixture of beef or pork cuts with other ingredients, depending on the brand.
Pork sausage is just that, ground pork with garlic, sage, cumin and other more pungent ingredients added.
Most hot dogs are cooked before packaging and will not hurt you if you eat them without boiling or roasting them first.
But, sausage is a raw product that has to be throughly cooked before eating. I usually start mine in the skillet on low then add just a little water to the skillet and put a lid on so that the center cooks before the outside of the sausage is finished. I prefer patties but, son and daughter prefer links. Now that I have pancreatitis they are off my list of "can have" foods. Sad, but, true. Janet

There actually is no differance at all. A hot dog is a sausage. Sausage is any smoked or cured meat put into a casing, so a hot dog would fall into that category.

I'm actually eating Turkey Sausage right now with rice. LOL

I think the real difference in a hot dog and a sausage is the hot dog have a taste to it that everybody like and the sausage is a long peace of meat.

Well even though they are probably made of the same stuff, the sausage stuff appears to have a chunkier texture. Like in sausage you can actually see the fat hunks and meat hunks, as where a hot dog filling was more finely ground.

The difference is in the seasoning, in the casing and also in the dexture of the grind.
For instance - Hot dogs and bologna are the same (same meat, seasoning and grind). Just the hotdogs are in a smaller casing so the taste changes a bit.

A hotdog is a sausage actually. I don't know why it isn't stated on the packages that that's what it is. Sausages have a chunkier texture and a firmer casing, though, and hotdogs have a smoother texture and softer casing.
