The Solstice came first. Jjewel, is wrong the Romans never forced anyone to believe in what they did, only stupid christians do that.

Winter Solstice was first recorded celebrating in 227 AD.

Christmas was in 336 AD.

Some people think Christians began celebrating Christ-mass as a way to celebrate the Roman solstice without having to announce it to the world.
