Mythbusters proved that a ducks quack does indeed echo. The echo however sounds exactly like the original quack and that's how the myth came about, because of the human ears inability to discern the two.

I know from experience that a duck quack echos my ducks were in a large echoey building and you could hear the echo.

an echo has only to do with the surfaces/materials around, any sound can echo, but some materials do reduce echos or could possibly just absorb the sound waves.
