i owned one in the past, and my step son has one now--they are GREAT dogs, just not for everyone !! they are very large when grown, yet they are very sweet and docile, because they are sheepdogs.....trained to protect the flock, the family today...great with children, wont nip or bite them when playing.,.,,great guard dogs....they do slobber some.....need some obedience training, yet easy to train and eager to please....need a fairly good sized yard, or must walk them daily for exercise...great companions..sleep against the front door to protect the family...Great Pyrenees will give their life, to protect the family against danger !!...check the AKC book on their specifics.....go to petfinder.com....this is a site for rescue groups.....just enter your Zip code, and enter breed wanted, and be AMAZED at how many great choices you have !!....talk to some of the rescue groups about Great Pyrenees, and ask them questions about your situation...they will answer you honestly, because they want to make placements that work for everyone....i recently adopted a Great Pyrenees mix from them, smaller dog, and my dog Sylvester is awesome !!.....check it out.....try it....do a good deed.....consider adopting a Great Pyrenees, only after talking to the rescue groups, to determine if this breed matches your needs and conditions !!!....good luck to you, in considering a Great Pyrenees as a new pet !!!!.....i could tell you so much more, yet time and space is tight...if i can help more, email me for further help...the best source for information, will be rescue groups handling Great Pyrenees, who could answer your questions, specific to your needs and wants, and even show you some of the dogs.!!! ...i think they are wonderfull, and they were the royal dog of King Louis 14 th of France, to guard the palace, and french estates and homes !! good luck to you !!

Prys can be great dogs, however thay are a guarding breed and need a lot of socialization and grooming!! I have Newfies and get a lot of people who got a Pyr thinking they were related and shared the same temperment and personality, which they do not.

We have a Great Pyr. We bought her to protect/guard our goats. We have been very careful not to overly socialize with her--we don't want her taking up with us (humans). She stays with the herd of goats and follows them.

Correct they are nothing like newfs. Pyrs are extremely difficult. They require more patience than most people have thats why they are so abundent in rescues and in shelters ready to die. People think they like them till they really have to care for and "teach" them anything.
If you are interested in getting one contact your local Big dog rescues and see about fostering. You will foster till he finds his own home. But it will give you a chance to see what they can be like.
