I own a chihuahua and I think she's great! Mine loves her crate, gives her a place to go when she wants to be left alone. Not sure about potty training as mine was a year and a half when I adopted her, but I've heard that Chi's can be trained to use a litter box. Also, mine is very much a "one person dog"...will go to other family members when wanting to be petted or to beg a scrap of food, but for the most part she's mine...she will guard the doorway of whatever room I go into. I don't know what a 6 pound dog thinks she will "conquer" but it sure is cute!
I've read that Chi's are not a very sociable breed but that it can be overcome with time...if you're getting a puppy it would seem that you have the odds in your favor. Mine does not like my other kid's dogs when they come to visit.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

I grew up with Chis and personally I'm not overly found of them. They are very skittish, most are rather yappy, and they tend to bite everyone even if they are well socialized. This doesn't apply to every Chi, I have seen some that weren't little terrors but for the most part I really am not impressed with the breed. The other thing to worry about is that your IG can easily kill a Chi when they are playing just by stepping on it's back. My folks had a Sheltie from when they showed Shelties and she was playing with the Chis and accidentally ran one over. I don't think the Chi had any broken bones but it was a traumatic experience and I remember my folks sold our Sheltie very soon after.

We have a Chihuahua and he's great! He potty trained very well. We actually have him litter trained so we don't have to worry about letting him outside. He does not like cold weather though. He also gets along with our other dogs (Lab. and English Pointers).

Chihuahuas are hard to potty train. I know. I have one. But you should get one.
But if you get a non-chihuahua-like one, you can become very good friends. I know. I have one. You should get one.
And some people think that only spoiled rich girls can have Chihuahuas...that's not true! I have one! I think you should get one, too!
Aww...speaking of my Chihuahua...she's sitting behind me in my chair on my chesapeake-bay-retriever's back. So cute. I wish you could see her right now.

I have 2 chihuahuas, I live in Miami, FL, and they get cold down here A LOT! They say that if you are cold, they are cold, if you are VERY COLD, they are VERY COLD. You may have to train her on WeeWee pads inside.
