On friday the stray beagle dog that we have taken in had a litter of 6 very healthy very cute fleas. However because she was pregnant we were afraid to put any flea medicine on her because we did not know if it would poison her babies. However Now the puppies are begining to get fleas and I still dont wont to make puppies sick. I need a CHEAP but affective way to get rid of her fleas so the puppies dont suffer from them.
I have an all herbal mixture that is suppose to keep the fleas off its called PENNYROYAL although Im not sure if we can use it on mom. The instructions say you can sprinkle the herbs around the bedding of pups or you can make it like a tea and wipe the dog down has anyone used this before and would it be safe for puppies.
Or is there a web site that I can look this information up????

As long as Momma has fleas, the puppies are going to have them too. Plus, the fleas on the Mom and pups are only a fraction of the fleas in their environment.
It would be safe to treat Mom with Frontline Plus. This would not only take care of any fleas on her, but the eggs, larvae and fleas in the environnment around her. You can probably get a dose from your vet. It might seem expensive up front, but the beauty of it is that is only needs to be applied once a month. Do not bathe the Mom after you applied the Frontline. Just have patience, and within a few days, all fleas, larvae and eggs in her environment will be destroyed. Best of all, you don't have to disturb the pups or traumatize them in any way to accomplish getting rid of the fleas.

Wipe the mom down in the pennyroyal. The herb will be absorbed into her body and can then be passed on to her pups through her milk. Make sure she gets dried off quickly and doesn't catch a chill.
We suggest contacting your vet for doses/strength of the pennyroyal used so you're not overwhelming mom's body with the stuff.
We also suggest that you physically remove what adult fleas you find and kill them (by crushing them between your fingernails). Use a flea comb on mom and the babies, and try to get off as many adult fleas as you can see. Make sure you kill any adults that you find. Don't just toss them in the wastebasket or toilet.
And we must congratulate you on taking in the mom and her babies!

Being as the pups are so small, getting anemia from blood loss is a far bigger concern than chemicals right now.
Give them a bath in some dish soap and make sure to dry them off really well so they don't get cold.
You could apply the pennyroyal afterwards and yes if it's safe for the puppies, it won't hurt mom.

It will not repel fleas but it will kill the ones on them. It is safe to use on the little pups. Use Lemon Dawn dish soap... Something in the citric acid of the lemon kills the fleas. This happened to my sister and some kittens and the vet told her to do this and it worked like a charm.

my stray kitten had fleas and when i did some research, I noticed that an active ingredient in flea killers was citrus. So i bought fresh oranges and mixed it with water ina spray bottle and every nite I would spray my little kitten and used a flea comb and they were gone. It took 2 weeks to get rid of all the fleas, plus I didn't allow my cat outside anymore. if your pets have fleas then so does your house. I also sprayed my entire apartment with this fresh orange/water spray.

I would call the vet and ask them what your best option is here. I would think it okay to apply frontline to momma dog, but the puppies can't yet. There is a pill you can get for little puppies too young for frontline, but these pups may even be too young for that. I am sure your vet may have a proper wash you can use on very young pups and if you call to ask, they should be able to help you with this.
It's very important that you get rid of the fleas on the puppies. They're bad for adults, but can be life threatening in young pups if not gotten rid of.

Read the directions before administrating any flea medicine. If in doubt, most all chemicals have a toll-free number to call the mfg and ask them.

Contact a vet as soon as possible.It is well known that very small puppies or kittens can die through flea bites.They will take all the nutrients from there blood,making them too weak to survive.If you are an animal lover you will get the poor puppies sorted out .

the only sure safe way is manually, try using a nit comb it will take a while but you will have nice flea free puppies.
