do police really check your bags in times square for new years eve? how can they check everyone? can i get away with bringing a couple of beers in my coat or purse?

I'm sure you can get away with carrying beer in your bag. They probably won't search you unless your carrying a really big or weird looking bag. It's drinking the beer on the street that's tricky. They'll ticket you or just make you pour it out in front of them. It may be easier to take a flask or other small container of hard liquor and hide it in your coat pocket. You could get a small bottle of cranberry juice and mix vodka in the bottle. It will still look like cranberry juice and you won't have to hide quite as much everytime to take a sip.

Times Square on New Year's Eve is much more organized than people realize!
When you get there, you are put into sectioned off areas so that the police can control the crowd better. You are not just walking around the streets and doing whatever.
It would be very easy for them to search your bag. If they don't, good for you! If they do, you only lose a few beers!

Times square is NOT where you want to be on new years eve, they don't check every bag but, don't be surprised if you get "Popped" drinking the Beer, the NYPD is pretty sharp, just ask the surprised people who have gotten open container tickets ! Tons of uniformed, and ununiformed police, behave yourself and they won't bother you, if you feel a bit frisky, don't be surprised by the ticket you get, I'm telling you, they have eyes in the backs of their heads, they HAVE to !

No, it's a random thing. There are way too many people at Times Square to even think of checking everyone. They basically look at you, your demeanor and if you are a suspect. If you are drunk they will probably escort you out. They dont' want people drinking much either as it is rude for children to smell the alcohol and since everyone is there to have fun. Also some people don't know their alochol limit and just keep doing it until they get rowdy.

they dont. It is a random thing like in the subway, just don't look suspicious. or attract to much attention on you
