And daughters also got their fathers drunk and then did them to make babies.
The Bible is about the doings of mankind! Good, bad and ugly! It's supposed to be your guide book to right thinking.
But, as Alex observed in Kurbrick's Clockwork Orange, that isn't always the case as he remarked in the end: "I was cured!"

Yep read the whole thing. There are some crazy stories in the bible. But you have to remember that the stories are true to that time and system of belief and written for the most part by men of that generation.
People can take out of context anything they choose to but seem to choose to pick on the bible quite a bit. There is human nature in the bible and the horrible and great things man has accomplished. Doesn't sounds so bad if you think about people telling you we are so evil today, when you go back and read how evil and perverse they were 2000 years ago.
and for the people that don't believe its all there
"If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives." Deuteronomy 22:28-29 NIV
Judges 19:22-29 (King James Version)
25But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
(Judges 11:29-40 NLT)
Jephthah Burns His Daughter
and of course Lot, but his daughters got him drunk and slept with him. Gen. 19:30-38
Remember this is also true of most religions NOT just the Christian Bible.

Not once is a child killed in a sacrifice to God recorded in the Bible. God allowed evil to be done but was not the cause of it. God did judge peoples and either destroyed a civilization directly or had His servants carry out His judgments. This was because of the people under His judgment living in a great sin. God never asked any parent to have sexual contact with their own children. Was it done.. Yes, but not as a command from God. Rape as you know it was a crime in Bible days too. If a stranger did that to your daughter you had the right to punish the man. If a man took your daughter, a fellow Hebrew, you had the right as her father to force him to take her as wife. If the father would rather not do that to his child he could make the man pay... Just because it is recorded in the Bible doesn't mean God was the cause.. But I guess if you are a God hater you would see Him as a dirty sex charged murderer. All to your detriment... Jim

I just started reading it front to back, I'm not religious or anything, just like to read, and man...am I confused. There is a lot of shady stuff going on that would put a romance novel to shame. The thing that's struck me so far is how full God is of himself. Not that he shouldn't be, I mean, he is God.
And the deal with the incest is a little off-putting, but that's just me.

Yeah I've read the whole Bible. Parents sleep with their kids. You're probably referring to the story of Lot and his daughters. Just because it happened doesn't mean it's an acceptable practice. The other stuff you mentioned, you just made that up. In all seriousness, have you actually read the Bible?

I have read enough of it and gone to bible studies enough to know that those stories are written to show modern day people that the same issues existed then as they do now.
They also show how God deals with those issues.
You must read each story in context to get the moral of it...(it's like reading one sentence of a news story and thinking you know the whole thing.)

Yes I have read the Bible, all of it. There's something to realize, all the things you mentioned happened under the Old Covenant, we're living in the new Covenant now. A Covenant with God based on mercy and forgivness not on the law.

In all seriousness...Yes, Thats why I have an Asso Degree in Biblical Theology, however..in response to your question...The most important aspect of interpreting Biblical Scripture is context.
Many people who become Judgemental about the Bible because of the violence and wars fought in it, fail to take these things in Context, and in many cases dont want to, these people have made up their minds already on the subject, and wont accept any thing else that is contrary to that irregardless of what evidence is produced.
So to those..I just say goodbye and I will pray for you, and dust my feet off and move on to those who's hearts and minds are open to Christ.

I know the passage that you refer to and you are grossly taking it out of context. Just because it is in the Bible does not mean that it was condoned by God. There are also examples in the Bible of what happens when people act out of RELIGION and do not have a sound leader.
The text is out of Judges chapter 21, but the last verse says "In those days there was no king in Israel. Every man did the right in his own eyes."
