insurance expires in march. I wanted to keep the policy in my mothers name until than, but would have changed it in march. I am only getting 135.00 back if i cancel now and start new policy. That is like 5 months worth of insurance which is alot. I will definently change it in march but until now i was wondering how i stand legally.

I think you are in the clear. I drove under that same arrangement for some time, before I could pay for my own. Of course, different places and times these days, so hard to be 100% sure what worked for me does for you, but as long as your name is on the certificate, it means the insurance company knows about you. That is what really counts, as far as I know.

Get the insurance changed into YOUR name as the main policyholder immediately.
Simple as that.
If you don't, it's technically "fronting" meaning you have used your mother to get a cheaper insurance policy. Not only will this void your insurance, it's also against the law.
If you were to have a claim and the insurers found out that your mother didn't own the car and you were the main driver, they would likely repudiate (turn down) your claim.
In the past four years I must have repudiated 50+ claims at work because of this problem. Insurers DO NOT like it at all.
The road tax issue is irrelevant, it's the insurance that you have a problem with

okay the way insurance companies work is the customer that is you, MUST have an insurable interest, now in your case your mum the policy holder DOES NOT have an insurable interest as you are the registered owner, and the company will re-bunk any claims on the policy under these grounds, now there are two ways to do this, first take a policy out in your own name, now this is a expensive option, especially if your mum has a no claims bonus on your vehicle. the 2nd way is to change ownership of the vehicle into your mum's name, this is simple on the log book of the vehicle there is a section for new owner of the vehicle fill your mums details in and send off the log book to the DVLA, who in turn will send out a new log book with your mum as the registered owner, this then ensures that your mum has an insurable interest, which will make your insurance valid and best of all legal

Who is the insurance with?
I have a care in my name and me Dad is insured on it and i wanted to add me to the policy and they said that this is not possible as it would make the insurance void because i am the owner of the car, but the road should not be a problem if both of you are there but i am in the same situation as you with the road tax so this will resolve my problem when people answer.

All you need for the road tax is the MOT and a valid insurance certificate or cover note, it doesnt matter if its is Joe Bloggs name as long as the vehicle is insured (as far as tax purposed go)
Direct Line are the insurers that give named drivers a no claims discount

No the car is fully covered by your mother naming you as a driver on her insurance, in the event of you having an accident they will claim off your mothers insurance, so you will be able to tax the car.

Strictly speaking, the motorcar must be registered on your call no matter if that is yours. in case you regulate the call of the keeper this may impact the variety of keepers recorded on the V5 registration certificate. if you're doing this to diminish your coverage expenditures, be very careful, because you're responsible of fraud, and this may nicely effect contained in the coverage company refusing to pay contained in the variety of a declare - which could run into 1000's of thousands if lives and sources were lost for this reason. If the motorcar extremely does belong for your mom, you nonetheless extremely could replace the registration information, yet save a reproduction of the V5 formerly you deliver it away and also you'll clarify the concern to any destiny customer, who may not be so careful of an further proprietor in those circumstances.

If I were you I would get the car insured in your own name. A friend of mine had his car insured in his fathers name. Unfortunately he had a bump and the insurance said that as he owned the car and was the main driver they would not honour his claim and said the insurance was invalid. He appealed but they stuck to their guns and he had to pay for all the dameage to his and the other car!!! NIGHTMARE

ignore those guys,
if your on your mothers insurence ur only coverd for third party fire n theft. which you are coved if you have accident.
best check u are definalty on your mothers insurence tho just to be safe, cuz if not you are driving illegally and if a accident happens your fault or not your fault u are in big trouble.
as for road tax i think u only need to show the mot certificate for it and if so happens need to show insurence then aslong ur name is on your mothers insurence papers then everything should be ok.
if u want ur own insurence work out what is cheapier being on ur mothers or having ur own.. use www.moneysupermarket.com to find cheapist car insurence.. i did and quinn direct was the cheapist for me.
