A metric ton also called a tonne (pronounced the same as ton) is equivalent to 1000 kg. A metric ton not an SI unit but is accepted for use with SI metric. The SI metric equivalent is a megagram (Mg). The tonne is defined as 1000 kg. It has approximately the same mass as 1000 litres of water depending on the temperature of the water.
