I don't think it's men specifically. Table manners are in decline everywhere. I go to restaurants and see men AND women with their elbows on the table, talking with their mouthful, talking on their cell phone without excusing themselves. Women and men equally. The problem I think is that most people (1) aren't familiar with the "rules" and (2) the "Me" Generation has made it acceptable to think only about ourselves and not those around us.

I don't think we should have to return to the days of knowing the fish fork from the salad fork from the meat fork, from the dessert fork, etc. But at least get rid of "see food" as my kids tried to joke about before I sent them to the kitchen without dessert.

Ok that is an over generalization of men. Women not only talk when they eat but sometimes they bring the kids in strollers to scream while eating so its kindof a give and take. I can't count how many times women would sit and gossip about someone and talk all this smak the whole time when I just wanted to swallow my food as fast as possible and get the hell out! So I think some people are just inherantly rude. Look at those who talk with cell phones while you are at a table with them. you can't get any ruder than that.

FWIW, I've noticed that a lot of restaurants - even many with very good food and competent, attentive service - these days don't provide an environment that readily supports good table manners. Places that provide such amenities as hat and coat racks, fresh linen table cloths, and full size cloth napkins seem to be in short supply in modern times.

"Most" men DON'T have bad table manners.
Sounds like you've been hanging out with the wrong men. :)

Stop dining with him, and tell him why. Somebody being honest with him and telling him how much his behavior offends people is the only way he'll ever change.

Since this seems to be involving only one man, it seems as though you should just tell him: "That's rude and embarrassing. Stop or I'll decline your dinner invitations." If it were as many as you made it seem, that would be more difficult, you're very lucky it's only the one. Hope this helped.

I think your friend is a bit uncivilized and maybe he lives alone and eats alone so much he forgets his manners. He has to realize a meal is not just for sustenance but also a very social event.

Most men I know have perfectly fine table manners. Why are you basing this opinion on most men when you are referring to only one man?

Because the main woman in our lives until we start dating / get engaged / married (our mom) didn't teach them to us. How's that for gender-blaming?

Painting with a mighty broad brush, no?

How does one guy turn into "most men"?
