Head lice bite your skin in order to draw blood for food and moisture. So that your blood doesn't clot and get them caught up in the scab they also inject a small amount of an anti-coagulant into the skin to keep the blood from clotting. It is this chemical that triggers the bodies histamine response. This reaction is the same for bites as well as allergens like pollen and dust mites etc.

You can usually quieten down the itchy response with an over the counter anti-histamine after you have removed the head lice.

Here is an article on itchiness and head lice.

You can also get a minor bacterial infection in the scalp if you have broken the skin while scratching. A medicated shampoo like tea tree or even a dandruff shampoo will help clear that up.

The skin also itches during the healing process after the lice of gone so don't assume there is always a problem with a little itchiness

Lastly, just thinking about head lice makes a lot of people itch! LOL

Because they bite on your scalp and suck a little blood while they are at it. Doesn't that make your head itch just thinking about it?
