Kelly A,
I'm not trying to insult Christians' belief, or their intelligence, I'm just trying to have a debate using logic.

According to the preachers I used to listen to and to the notes in study bibles, it was the custom during that time to be considered married when you got engaged, even though the two people had not yet actually got married or consummated the marriage. That explains why Joseph was going to get a divorce because the engagement was as binding as the marriage.

This may be one of those "Pat" answers I talk about, but not sure.

I was told that this question tends to taunt many christians. The answer is you have to have a strong faith and believe in miracles. Remember Jesus was God's son, and we are believed to have been born in sin, which is why we get baptised. Mary was given a child by god. He is the creator. This is supposed to be the immaculate conception. A miracle. That god placed his only child to be born of the "virgin mary." She was promised to Joseph, same as engaged.

From the Everyday Bible, quoting Luke 2:4-7 "So Joseph left Nazareth, a town in Galilee, and went to the town of Bethlehem in Judea...Joseph registered with Mary because she was engaged to marry him. While Joseph and Mary were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have the baby. She gave birth to her first son." This is the plain English version. So no, Mary and Joseph were not yet married when she gave birth to Jesus.

They were married but did not consummate the marriage until after the birth.

Matt. 1:24 When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. 25 But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.

Not only was it a custom in the Arab society to Engage/Marry a young girl it was also common in the Jewish society. The case of Mary the mother of Jesus comes to mind, in non biblical sources she was between 11-14 years old when she conceived Jesus. Mary had already been "BETROTHED" to Joseph before conceiving Jesus. Joseph was a much older man. therefore Mary was younger than 11-14 years of age when she was "BETHROED" to Joseph. This paragraph was sent to me by brother Mike, who embraced Islam recently; may Allah Almighty always be pleased with him: According to the Priest of Saint Mary's Catholic Church: "Mary was approximately 14 years old when she got pregnant with Jesus. Joseph, Mary's Husband is believed to be around 36. Mary was only 13 when she married Joseph. When she first was arranged with Joseph she was between 7 to 9 years old."

According to the "Oxford Dictionary Bible" commentary, Mary (peace be upon her) was was 12 years old when she became impregnated.

Also keep in mind that being "betrothed" in those days was as good as being married.
The angel of the Lord told Joseph not to be affraid to marry her. And Joseph obeyed the Lord and married Mary. They were married when she gave birth.

Mat 1:18 ¶ Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

They should be. Otherwise both of them will be stoned to death for living in as a couple out of wedlock. Jewish Law.
Overtax is quite right there in his comments. There is a finding lately that God really want to see how the Jewish would react to hearsays and that it needed a sinner to erase away their (Israel) sins together. Jesus was not born for the world. Only for the Jews.
