My cousin and I (21 and 20) recently visited NYC in late September. Since we were on a budget we booked our hotels through hotels.com and priceline.com (most hotels in NYC are never cheap no matter what time of the year it is). Our first hotel (which was booked with hotels.com) was a hostel. I don't remember the name but even if I did I would not recomment it. The hotel was located on 95th and Broadway, pretty far from most of the places we wanted to visit. The only reason why we stayed there was because it costs about 80 bucks (with taxes and fees). The hotel was very small and crowded. The rooms itself were so small that if you stood in one corner and stretched out your arm, you could probably touch another person standing on the opposite corner. The room only bunk beds, a nightstand, and a A/C window unit. The bathroom had to be share with four other rooms. The second hotel we stayed at was booked through priceline.com. It was called the Exchange Hotel and it was located one block north of Wall Street. The rooms were very big with modern and trendy furniture. The rooms also had a plasma TV and complimentary breakfast. Overall I would say that the Exchange Hotel was one of the nicest hotels I have ever stayed at. The total costs for the night was $110 and that's with taxes and everything. I recommend you look for hotels through priceline.com. I have used their services several times and I have not been dissapointed.

I stayed at the Hotel Edison which is on 47th and Broadway. It is literally a 2 minute walk from the door to the heart of Times Square. It's a fabulous location, the rooms are comfortable and its reasonably priced.

Try The Waldorf Astoria, it's cheap and unfussy, but clean and friendly. Ask for one of the larger rooms though, as some are a little cramped.
