Children can start using scissors at about 3. First, show them how to properly hold the scissors. Do some modeling with them. Hold a piece of paper in one hand and the scissors in your other. Explain that when you cut that only the paper moves and that the scissors stay at the same level. Some craft stores carry “two person” scissors where the child holds the inside of the handle and the adult holds the outside. These really help teach the child how to hold and cut. Cut out some small strips of paper (about 1 x 5 inches). Draw some vertical lines on them you’re your child can follow. Once they master this then you can draw zig zag lines or curvy lines that they can cut. Here are some great scissors that I use in my classroom http://www.montessoriservices.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=97_1420_2891 Hope this helps!

Usually you can let them start using scissors around the age of 2 1/2 or 3 .. just make sure they are appropriate for their age.. And watch them while they are using them.. Best way is to show them how you do it and then let them show you. It will take practice but they will catch on fast.

Luck

It all depends on the child.. You should be able to tell when they're ready to understand that it's not a toy and he can only use them when an adult is supervising.. My son was using safety scissors by 3 yrs. Good luck

For your 2 year old, I would suggest buying her plastic scissors with a safety edge. I think my daughter and son started to learn at 3.

If the scissors are childproof (Plastichandles and blunt) then they can start anytime if they are supervised! (obviously not before 2 years of age).
I would not leave them alone with them until 5-7 depending on maturity.

I am a pre-school teacher and I think 2 years is a good time to start. If not definitely 3. You will have to supervise them or bad things could happen... We start by using lined paper for them to cut on the line. Good luck and don't forget supervise, supervise and supervise some more.

They make scissors for kids that seriously couldn't cut butter. I think it's fine to let kids use those at maybe 4 or 5 just to get the hang of it. Around 5 1/2 or 6 is when I think it's fine for them to use sharper ones.
