If it is a discoloration scar, then tanning may make it worse. In some cases, tanning can seem to make the appearance of discoloration scars better, but this is only superficial. Your best bet is to go to a dermatologist or an esthetician. Since I had a number of discoloration scars, I went to my wife who is an esthetician and received a microdermabrasion, which helped me immensely.

Scars are caused by something, for example there are acne scars ( which are very uneasy for removing), scars from thermal trauma ( burnt), from incidents, etc. If you say where are situated your scars will be helpful, because it is of vital importance too. If you seek for a really working remedy I would NOT advise you to start using "Mederma" ( too much advertisement, not much effect). Personally I would recommend you the "Zeraderm" ultra scar gel, which is based on silicons and really is of help, especially for hypertrophy's scars.
Hope that is of help.
Best of luck!

Tanning will make your scars more visible. Lighten them up to match your skin tone using papaya kojic and licorice base soap and cream which are available online. These work wonders. Maybe it will work on you too. Try searching it through Google 'shopaholic's bargains'

Depending on your complexion and the type of scar, it either will or won't. A lot of the time the skin itself will become darker, but the scar will remain the same color.

Tans can possibly make your scars more noticeable, depending on where they are and how big they were. Especially scars such as stretch marks.

My dermatologist told me that tanning will also darken your scars as it darkens your skin. I thought it would help too, but I guess not.

yes, because scares show cuts that are deeper into your skin where the sun may most likely not reach very well, so the scar comes out lighter complected.
