I want to be as close to times square as I can and but still be inside. I want to drink first, get liquored up then brave the crowds. Please help! I dont care if it is a dive or not!

As a native I really think it's a bad idea to go to Times Square on New Year's Eve......you won't be able to get out at all so be prepared. ALso, the streets are so jammed packed it's nuts....you really cant' move.....I make it a point to steer clear of it each year....the tourists take over the city.
There are a ton of Irish Pubs in the area......go to one of those....but be for warned these will be packed as well. Brave the crowds? You'll be lucky to even move 20 feet!

The Pig N Whistle on 47 th st
O'Looney's on 46th

All of these places are right off of 7th ave

I once attended a party thrown by Waterford Crystal at the Pig N Whistle. -They designed the ball that drops. I met their sales rep there the day before.

be warned - a half million people will have the exact same plan. any bar remotely close to TQs will be jam-packed seemingly to the point of violating the laws of physics.
