My 6 1/2 week old puppy was not playful at all yesterday, nor did he make any sounds. All he did was sleep all day except for at some times he was looking like he was trying to poop but with no luck. I gave him a few drops of mineral oil to help him out. I also scrambled an egg and gave him a few cc's (raw of course) and made some warm soapy water and squirted a cc into the poor little guys behind. He acted a little better this morning although I didn't find any poop. Will he be okay? Did I do the right thing?

The vet told me to give him the mineral oil and I know that a squirt of soapy water is like a natural enema and will help him go, too.

He already eats canned food. He is just now getting some teeth so there's no way he could eat hard dog food if he wanted to. I feed him Pedigree puppy.

Puppy's are generally weaned from the mother at 6 weeks, so he isn't too young. And I surely do not feed him people food!!

Puppies are not weaned until at least 8 weeks. In small breed dogs, most good breeders will keep the pups with the mother until 10-12 weeks. So the other answers are correct, your dog is too young to be away from his mother.

Young puppies can experience a sudden drop in glucose that will make them listless. You can try to find an energy or glucose gel at the petstore, they make them specifically for young puppies or active dogs that need a boost.

As for constipation, most breeders with young puppies will massage their belly and rub their bottom with a warm damp cloth- this replicates the way their mothers induce them to defecate.

Bottom line, he needs to eat and poop, so get him to eat or drink whatever you can- puppy formula, canned food, meat-only baby food, etc.

Pedigree dog food is not very good, there are too many fillers and preservatives. Switch to a better quality food such as Eukanuba, Nutro, Blue Buffalo, etc. Do some research online to find high-quality dog foods. Supermarket brands like Iams, Purina, and Pedigree aren't good for dogs.

If you can't get him to eat and poop today, he needs to see a vet tomorrow. If you wait too long, he might not recover.

I agree with everyone else that this puppy is way too young to be away from his mom.
Also a 6 1/2 week old puppy should not be given people food!
He should still be on his mothers milk
or a milk supplement that you get from the vet!
They should be getting feed every 2 to 3 hours.
So they don't get malnourished and dehydrated!
And all puppy's this age will not always be playful.
He is still a baby let him rest.
But I would still take him to the vet to get a check up!
You could also get a book on how to take care of puppy's!
I hope everything turns out well!

The lathargy is what concerns me the most, especially at his age the threat of parvo is very dangerous, however parvo symptoms are the opposite (diarreah and vomiting). Is he still drinking water? When he eats his canned food is he eating a good amount? If not try adding some warm puppy milk to the food (do not use cow milk puppies and kittens are lacrose intollerant). The mineral oil is a good idea, if he still is not going you can try a tiny bit of milk of magnesia (by tiny I mean a couple of drops). If he still has not gone in a day or so and is still really lathargic, I would take him to the vet. I hope your littel guy feels better soon!

No, you didn't do the right thing.

Puppies eat things that aren't right for them. There's a chance that he could have done that and now whatever it is is blocking his intestine (why he's not going to the bathroom or eating).

A vet visit will probably mean an xray to see what's going on. And I definitely wouldn't be self diagnosing or administering an enema for heaven's sake, you're not even really sure what the problem is and you could cause more damage by inserting something into his rectum!

Call the professional - that's your vet.

Yes, puppies are often weaned at 6 weeks, but its not reccomended until 8 weeks for both health and behavioral issues.

If its been 24 hours you need to take him straight to the vet. In a puppy this young it can become life threatening very quickly. He'll need fluids ASAP and the vet needs to figure out what's wrong with him.

Your pet needs to be seen by the vet.
And I would not be feeding a 6 1/2 week old pup eggs nor giving enamas to him.
This is a case for the vet.
With a pups size they can die very quickly from dehydration and if he is not poopoing he may not be eating very well.
You need to be sure you are feeding a high quality diet as pups do not eat much and you need to be sure that what goes in is good stuff that they can digest and use to fuel their bodies.

When your dog is consipated, switch over to canned dog food until he releaves himself. I've heard of some of the remidies you have used, but would stay away from anything that was not instructed by your vet. I had a dog that use to eat socks when no one was home and found out that one had clogged him up. Had to get it removed by the vet and after that we woudl just check his but for anything hanging out and have to pull it out or take him to the vet. If he has an obstruction all the remidies may make it worse for him or it might help. I wouldn't take the chance. If he doesn't go in soon, I would take him to the vet, but stop trying to make him go until you know what the problem is.

Hypoglycemia is very common in puppies. That is a drop in their sugar level. Try to give him nutrical, a sugary vitamin paste. You can find it at any pet store, or you can try to put a dab of Karo Syrup Light on his teeth and gums. It should perk him up if thats the problem.

Call your vet and see what he thinks. He might be able to walk you through some suggestions over the phone. If not, take him to the vet so he can get better!! Treat him like your baby...would you let your baby suffer or put soapy water up his ***??

Jeez no. Go to a vet. This puppy is too young to be away from his mom, and he could have something seriously wrong. In a puppy this young this could cause death in a very short time.
