The market was having a sale on all watermelons for $3.99 ea. Some were small, round and had a shinny dark skin while others were large, egg shaped and had a paler green skin. I'm more interested in taste than size, so which should I have picked?

I am southern- I have stolen many a watermelon from a field as a child. So I do consider myself a pro at this.

Always refrigerate before eating it, it firms up the meat. The hotter it is the wetter it is (more mess). I always cut mine over a towel or a outside picnic table.

Smaller are sweeter and darker.
Larger are watery and just a yummy with a bit of salt on them.
It is all about what you like. The skin is thicker on the smaller ones, so you get less meat.

If you are spiking it with rum or everclear, then use the large one and use a long needle and roll it a few times in the ice box before serving it.

Never mind the old wive's tale, those seed won't hurt ya to eat them, but its more fun to spit them at friends and family.

Feed those rins ( outside) to the local horses or cows, they love them. Mine would line the fence just waiting for it.

Good Question! My dad always thumps on his watermelons. I always thought it was trial and error. I think it depends on where it comes from personally. I Michigan melon just isn't as flavorful as a Texas melon to me!

Flick the melon with your fingernail, if the sound is a high pitched "plink" it's not ripe, if it goes "plank" it's ripening but not yet at optimum sweetness, if it goes "plunk", a nice deep pitch it is at it's sweetest.
