A trim keeps the ends fresh and will help the hair to grow.
A good healthy diet, with vitamins and minerals. Or you can take a vitamins. Wash you hair and do not stress it out by over blow drying or curling (makes hair breakable)
Also a nice long conditioner that you leave on for like 10-20 minutes. I use my regular conditioner and then put a platic bonnet on and wait like 10 minutes then wash and lightly condition. Makes my hair soft and helps the shine and heathly look.

You cannot possibly eat the right combination of foods on a daily basis to equal the amount of nutrients in a pill / supplement. Those "silly pills" contain all the right supplements needed to give systemic support to your hair's growth cycle. Anything you put on the hair such as oils/shampoo, etc is being put on the dead keratin tissue.
The pills aren't silly, but thinking you don't need them to cause improvement is silly.

Actually you can try shampoo with Biotin which can be bought at a salon or general nutrition store. I know it worked for me. Also, eat healthy particularly foods rich in vitamin E, A, and B. Keep the ends trimmed of splits and condition weekly at least. See a stylist and get products she reccommends for your hair type, they really are less damaging than the ones in the store. Its kinda like the herbal medicine hype, its not regulated, neither are those store brands !

keep it trimmed( even a 1/4 inch a month) and in your spare time, like tv watching, sitting at desk , ETC ... massage your scalp ... stimulation is the key to maintaining healthy/growing hair follicles.

Trim the ends regularly ((every 2-3 months)) to prevent dead ends that stop it from growing ((and looking bad)). Some shampoos might help, too. Don't know which ones, sorry :P.

Time.
There is really no way to make your hair grow any faster than nature intended it to.
I know it stinks, but you are just going to have to wait. Sorry!
