You should take a few certification classes and see how you like it...it isn't all designing and being creative. You have to have excellent people skills and be customer service oriented. You have to be extremely well organized and be able to work within budgets, timelines, spacial constraints and VERY tight deadlines. You have to know about the bride and groom's attire, locations for reception and ceremonies, different countries' wedding customs and invitation etiquette. Take a look at courses taught by Wedding Beautiful Worldwide or the Association of Bridal Consultants...it will give you a feel of how much really goes in to planning a wedding for someone else.

A wedding planner designs, creates, and coordinates vendors and activities for a wedding. You need to be creative, yet completely meticulous and organized. You also need a solid list of vendors (florists, wardrobe, cake, hair and makeup, lighting, music, caterers, sound people, party supplies, etc) to choose from with a variety of prices. That being said...
You can charge either a percentage of the wedding budget, or by the hour. My friend charges $150 an hour when someone doesn't have a budget and they just need advice.

it all depends on your experience, portfolio, location, and caliber of clientle. The place to start in my opinion is working with a florist, or at a location that specializes in weddings. On each side you have the opportunity to control many of the visual elements of the event while still focusing in one area. Then, once you have some experience, you can branch out and start taking side gigs as the event planner.
Just make sure you have enough experience to know what you are doing before you start...it would not be easy to live down ruining someones wedding.
That said, you can make anywhere from $300 a job to 10% of the overall wedding costs.

A wedding planner make lots of money because u will be taken time from your family try to help them. Then you have to start buying stuff out of your money b/c it might take time for them to get the money to you. The more u spend out of your pocket the more you get back in your pocket. Don't let nobody change your mind about this b/c money talk. It take a lot of time.Say u charge $675.00 for decorator the church, u decorator 3 church in one month that $2,025 and that good if u young and don't have any kids. Then u can get a lil part time job somewhere.

My fiance's daughter is using a wedding planner in Toronto Ontario and she is charging them $500. We are using a fellow out of a hotel and his costs are built into the whole package.
