If he likes dark & Belgian, I'd assume he doesn't like the white or wheat ales, so those (including Blue Moon) are out. Though why anyone would buy something as common as Blue Moon as a gift unless it was their favorite is beyond me.
Great Belgians: Kwak, Delerium Tremens or Delerium Nocturnum... Gouden Carolus is great too, as is Gulden Draak & Duvel. I'm really fond of tripels, so that's what I tend to stick with.
A GREAT, seriously great stout I just had is from Chicago's Goose Island, their Bourbon County stout. It's thick, very syrup-y and seasonal (some maple & molasses flavors), and plenty of chocolate & coffee flavor as well. Out of Michigan Bell's Kalamazoo Stout is like a cafe mocha, really great stuff. Maybe try some smoked porters for a fireside drink. Many places make Christmas ales-- Cleveland's Great Lakes Brewery has a great one, their Christmas Ale is brewed with honey & spices.
Old Rasputin is a great imperial stout.

Chimay is a wonderful Belgian beer.
If you're looking for something in the "Holiday" variety, try Anchor's Holiday brew. It's a US beer, but it's fantastic, and ages very well. I've had a six pack of the 2000 that I bought that year. I drink one every year around Christmas, and they get better w/ age, like a good wine.

Look for Ommegang ... it's a really rich European style beer that comes in bottles almost the size of wine bottles (some even have a cork.) It's brewed in Upstate New York. They have a website.
Also, Widmer Brothers Brewery have a couple of really great micro-brews that are amazing! The unfiltered wheat and the bourbon barrel bock (beer that's been fermented in bourbon barrels) are my favorites.

Voted the number 1 beer in the world. Very little of it is made each year and only a small percent of that shipped, but you can get it here.
