Need help trying to get this resolved. It is only a couple hundred bucks and I have provided all the proof to show that they have misbilled me but they will not adjust the bill.

Now the collections guy is doing his thing - threatening to ding my credit report and what not.

How should I handle this?

Now that it is in collections, there are only a few things you can do. (1) pay the money so that it doesn't ruin your report and then take the company to small claims so that you get your money back (2) dispute it with the credit bureaus (3) write a letter and send it certified mail to the collection agency disputing the claim. They have to send you proof that you owe the bill and that the original creditor gave them permission to collect the debt. The last two options may get the debt resolved shortly, but be warned that you may have to go through it again if the collection agency sells the bill to another agency. There is a link below for sample dispute letters.

What kind of company or service is it for? I know some services like phone and electric they have certain rules they have to follow that are listed in either the front of your phone book or the back of your bill. But as to when it gets to this point, I guess I have no good answer! Sorry and good luck!

BTW you know you can enter a short "reply" note on any of your credit reports.....in other words you can send the credit report companies, there are 3 main ones, a statement that says, "Amount due to XYZ Company was under dispute. All proof was given that these charges were erroneous because ________ I refused to pay them and they sent the bill to a collections agency." The credit reporting companies then have to add your note to any credit reports that are sent out to future creditors. Just FYI

My brother had the same thing happen to with Dell. He refused to pay there error and they did all collection crap. A year later they called my brother and told him they made a mistake! They didn't fix all the damamge they made.
Keep trying, they have those free advice kids studying law in most areas they'll look at it for free.
Talk to another collection person or there boss. Or better ask tehm to take you to court to save money. LOL! Make sure you can prove it. Small claims court is only $35-40!
