Decay can happen before the teeth push thru the gums. As an infant, just take a clean moist wash cloth and wipe the gums gently 2 times a day.
As the mouth starts filling with teeteh, get a soft bristle kids toothbrush and brush the childs teeth for them until they are about 5 yrs old. After that, they should be able to do it themselves, if not, the at least supervize the child.

When the baby is still just a baby you can use a soft washcloth that is wet to clean the baby's teeth. The sugars in formula etc can cause tooth decay. As they get older as in the toddler stage then a soft child's tooth brush is recommended. Real toothpaste should not be used until the child is old enough to know not to swallow it although there are some training toothpastes out there you can buy that are ok. Usually when the baby is about a year old it is time to consider his first dentist visit to have his teeth checked.

Very and I think you should start as soon as possible, even wiping the gums with a cloth so when the baby gets older, s/he will be used to it. Their are natural sugars in milk or formula that left in the baby's mouth can rot a baby's teeth. Brushing the baby's teeth is especially important at night.

We waited until my son had some teeth before we started brushing. He just turned three and he just started cooperating with the brushing--and sometimes he still fights it. We used to have to hold him down and pry his mouth open to do it and a lot of tartar used to form on his bottom front teeth. The dentist said that we still must try to do it and that holding him down now to brush doesn't stop him from doing it later.

There are natural sugars in formula and food that can cause decay to happen but by taking a soft bristle toothbrush to them it helps prevent any damage from happening.

If not, they still can get cavities and bad teeth that will cause pain and need work. I would prefer to avoid such early trauma as dental work with young kids, or that of total extraction.
