It's illegal to sell and manufacture in the US, but not to import. There's a number of European sources you can order from online. It's spendy and takes a while, but generally a reliable order.
Here are some places to start:

It is against customs regulations to import, liquor stores will not be able to order it.
You can buy Pastis in the US which is similar to absinthe.
Many sites do sell it over the internet but do your research first as there is a lot of misinformation and many products out there which are not absinthe.

Absinthe can be purchased on the web from sites outside the US. Customs will allow 2 liters to be shipped for personal use.
I recommend Absinthe Montmartre from
http://www.absinthemarket.com/ with very low shipping costs to the US
Montmartre is made from the original recipe by a family distiller in Vienna. The price is reasonable and the product is well rated.

In Louisianna there is a similar liquor made called "Herbsinte", they use it in a number of cocktails, while it is available here in Canada but only in the provinces of BC, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec.
It comes from France and is labelled here in Ontario to contain wormwood extract, as some people have an allergy to it, it is thought that it induces halluesenations, that was the so-called middle age properties that alchemsit used it for treating headaches and depression, but the amounts put in the infustion now in France and some is distilled in Germany and other European countrys under different names, now a days it does not carry the potentecy of the elixir they made back in the 1600's.

There are laws that prohibit the sale of production and sale of absinthe within the United States but you can order it online from overseas and have it shipped to your home. It comes in plain packaging and is not labeled. There is a wide variety of brands available ranging in cheaper brands to very expensive. A decent bottle of the "Green Devil" will cost you about $50 plus shipping. Good luck with your search and make sure you dilute it with a lot of water and sugar. It is very bitter and drinking large quantities will make you see what is called "green fairies" (random green colored stars) and everything will seem to have a greenish aura around it.

The real stuff has not been legal for many years. It is available in Canada and most of Europe. You may be able to order it on line from a foreign country. Wormwood is the ingredient that is banned in the US and was for years in many country's.

Absinthe is prohibited in the United States, though it is not a "banned" substance like Marijuana and Cocaine.

It is illegal to purchase in the United State. Not illiegal to have, just purchase. It is legal to sell it in Canada or Mexico(Better luck with Canada). You can also purchase it online.

Don't waste your time or money.
It's very expensive and just gets you drunk. You will not have visuals.
It's very hard to find the "real" absinthe anymore, even in Europe.
