My friend will soon give me her female Pembroke Welsh Corgi because she already has a male and can no longer care for both due to personal reasons. My friend actually just rescued her, about a week ago. She is 6 mos. old., and seems like she's been abused by her prev. owner because she's not as outgoing as the male and is easily nervous. Right now she's only attached to my friend, has a tendency to bark alot and sometimes she has fits...My friend told me she growled and attempted to bite her little brother and her also. I just wanted some advice on how I can tame her barking and her fits, how I can help her adjust to her new home with me, how I can house break her and what type of toys I should give her. Also, she hasn't been spayed. I do plan on getting her spayed, I just wanted to know also that once she is spayed, will she not go in heat anymore? I have never had a dog before so I'm still learning. Thanks for your help!

Good news- she is still a puppy. So the attitude adjustment starts now. You must be the BOSS. The person she lives with must be her owner. So unless you friend is the owner, You need to take that respect back. Keep her on a collar and leash. This is not a "lap dog". This is an active dog. She will mellow in time.

Don't let the short staute fool ya. She is solid muscle and can take down a small cow or sheep. Corgi's are a smart, clever and very special breed. They are not the most friendly of dogs until they love you- are very protective then, they are work dogs. You must get her busy. She will need her "space" they are territorial. They love chew toys, sqeaky ones, give them treats too. They need to be exercised, so she can run with you in the park, really they are fast. They get fat fast otherwise.

They will always bark, chase, nip at and "herd" its their nature. You need to get some classes at Pet's Mart or somewhere together and NOW>

Have you owned dogs? Spade is fixed for good- no more season.
Get it done NOW- unless you plan to breed her in about 2 years from now.

The is what needs to happen- Get her spade, let her heal, get into classes and practice. Make her a space on the floor in a corner, they are foot dogs, so don't encourage her on the bed or sofa unless you call her on to it. They are very bossy, and will take what they want, so you need to always remain in control.
They may bite for food, so be careful. It will take some time for the both of you. Go online to learn from others. Research it.

I highly recommend that you get a hands' on class- ASAP, it is for both of you. You don't know how to control her yet, so its a wonderful thing for you. Have fun. She is a great dog- lucky you!

Get her spayed and she will no longer have heat periods. It is better for her health and it will lower her risk of cancer.
Then get into a puppy training class.
This will help you to bond with her and teach you how to train her. The more you work with her the more time you will have to bond with her. Dogs follow the leader and if you learn how to be her leader she will learn to love you and to look to you for direction and guidence.
Good luck.
