Redness, tenderness, swelling, and puss! Puss would probably be a white, yellow, or green color or tint! There would also be some heat coming from the wound itself. If you see any of those at the same time GO TO THE DOCTOR!!!!!!! It could be any type of microorganisms in that wound! They will treat it and probably give you some type of oral antibiotic of topical cream! More that likely they will give you some pills to take! Follow the instructions they give you and all ways take ALL of the medication because it can come back!

I had the same thing and it actually wasn't the tattoo that was causing the inflammation. I didn't know but the stuff (tat cream or antibiotic cream) they recommend putting on it was causing the problem. I have about 15 tats. So, after I figured all that out I only put Aveeno lotion on the area and it felt better and healed fast. I did that with my last 5 and had no problems at all. Before I figured all that out my tats would get bumps, hurt, itch (itching is normal when it is beginning to heal not right after I got it) ooze, etc

Now don't get me wrong tats can become infected or inflamed themselves but my tat artist said that most problems are caused by the creams that people put on top of them or not keeping them clean. Good luck!

oh, believe me, you'll KNOW if it's infected! It will bump up and become very red and irritated. It may scab or bleed or possibly puss up...basically, it will hurt really bad and look really nasty-lookin.' To heal properly, it should be kept moist with lotion, neosporin, or aloe gel (or something else like that) for the first couple of days, then allow it to dry out for the next few days--it will look smooth and kinda of shiny, maybe peel a just a very little bit, which is OK.

If the area around the tattoo is red, and/or if it feels warm or even hot to touch, then it could be inflamed and infected.

Inflamed and red you need to make sure you are washing it through out the day and if it is infected start using neosporin to kill the infection.

I tell you now that you would not need to ask that questions! You would know if it was infected as it hurts like hell and you would feel very very poorly so you wouldnt be sat at a compluter typing that!

the tattoo is not healing, it's soar, it's itchy, it might look swollen, or pusy, or painful, or hot, you could have a fever, and the tattoo could be tender.
